7 Signs You've Outgrown Your Website

A retro flip phone - a nod to a website that's stuck in the past

The clearest sign you've outgrown your website? You wince a little every time you send the link. If your site is still out here representing a version of you from three haircuts ago, it's time. Here are seven signs - and yes, you're allowed to feel personally attacked by at least two of them.

Good news first: outgrowing your website means you've grown. Your work got better, your business got clearer, your prices got braver. That's the whole point. The bad news is your website didn't get the memo. So let's see how many of these make you laugh-cringe.

1. You hold your breath before you send the link.

You know the moment. Someone asks for your site and you go "oh, um, yes, one sec" while bracing like you're about to show them a photo from 2014. A website that's actually working doesn't make you flinch - it makes you want to send it before they've even finished asking.

2. Your work has leveled up. Your site hasn't.

New skills, dreamier clients, offers you're genuinely proud of - you've grown. Meanwhile your website is still showing a version of you from a few years (and a few pivots) ago. If your website were a phone, it'd still flip open. Everyone who finds you is meeting a ghost of business past.

3. You explain what you do better in a DM than your homepage does.

You can describe your work gorgeously in a voice memo at 11pm. But your homepage? Suddenly it's giving "corporate mission statement, read aloud by a robot." If your group-chat self is more compelling than your website, your website has some catching up to do.

4. There are pages you avoid sending people to.

Be honest - there's a page you steer people around like a couch you keep meaning to replace. The About page that still says "coming soon." The service page you abandoned mid-sentence. If you wince at your own site, your visitors can feel it too. They're just too polite to say so.

5. It doesn't sound like you anymore (or it never did).

You reread your copy and it's... fine. Professional. Completely interchangeable with every other person in your field. But "fine" never made anyone fall for you. Your website should sound like you on your most clear, confident, slightly over-caffeinated day - not a template wearing your logo.

6. You're getting wrong-fit inquiries - or none at all.

Either the wrong people are sliding into your inbox - the ones who want a custom wedding cake at grocery-store-sheet-cake prices - or it's gone suspiciously quiet in there. Both usually trace back to the same culprit: a site that's fuzzy about who you're for. Clarity is a bouncer. It waves the right people in and gently shows the rest the door.

7. You keep saying "I'll get to it."

It's been on the list since... let's not. You know it needs love, it just keeps losing to literally everything else. Meanwhile it's the first impression most people get of you. "Later" has been running your front door this whole time, and "later" is doing a mediocre job.

What if two or three of these hit a little too close?

Then congratulations - you didn't fall behind, you outgrew your website. That's the good problem. Falling behind means scrambling to catch up. Outgrowing means you got too good for the thing you built back when you were just starting out. That cringe you're feeling isn't "something's wrong with me." It's "I'm ready for something that actually fits."
